Nonylphenol (NP) is widely used in industry as an emulsifier and surfactant precursor in detergents. It cleans well and is cheap, but its structure resembles oestrogen.

◇ Environmental hormone: once absorbed, it disrupts the endocrine system and affects reproductive development

◇ Bioaccumulation: it dissolves into rivers and oceans, builds up in fish, and returns to humans through the food chain

◇ Infant risk: a greater impact on foetuses and infants

Taiwan has banned NP / NPEO in household detergents since 2018, but some cheap detergents may still leave residues. Testing for NP is a dual guarantee of environmental responsibility and safe use.

A colourless, pungent gas often used as a preservative. It can come from raw-material residues.

◇ WHO Group 1 carcinogen (leukaemia, nasopharyngeal cancer)

◇ Triggers dermatitis, conjunctivitis and asthma

◇ Residue on clothing stays in long-term contact with skin

Formaldehyde is a cheap preservative but its harm is irreversible. Testing proves it is safe for long-term skin contact.

The acidity/alkalinity value. Skin's natural pH is about 4.5-5.5 (weakly acidic).

◇ Excess alkalinity damages the skin's acid mantle, causing dryness, itching and dermatitis

◇ Ordinary laundry powder is pH 9-11 (strongly alkaline)

APGO's pH 6.4 is weakly acidic and skin-friendly, so it is safe for sensitive skin and infants.

They absorb UV light and emit blue light — a visual trick that makes white clothes look whiter.

They are banned in food and paper products in Taiwan, but there is no mandatory regulation for detergents. APGO tests voluntarily to prove zero addition.
